The environment refers to our
surroundings which includes both the living and non living things which provide
conditions for development and growth as well as dangers and damages.
Per the definition, the
environment can either sustain life or destroy life depending on how we relate
to it. In recent times, the world has awakened to the rampant environmental
crises such as droughts, desertification, floods, sea level rise, global
warming just to mention but a few. These recent occurrences clearly indicate
that there is something wrong with the environment. The reason why the world is
now experiencing more of the harsher side of this beautiful environment created
by God lies in the way humankind now irresponsibly relates to the environment.
To avert or mitigate the impacts
of the environmental crises is for us to change our attitude toward the
environment. Saving the environment is not reserved for people with environmental
science background because these negative impacts are not respecter of persons or
locations. It should be a collective attempt by all and sundry to start doing
the basic things right. Few of the basic things are garbage disposal, tree
planting and protection of forest, wildlife protection, watershed management,
etc.
Let us begin something today that
saves life tomorrow.
